ONINAKI STORY

Reincarnation is the foundation of our way of life. We celebrate the lives we've been given, and offer up prayers for the next.

It is grief of death which shackles the living, and causes the dead to stray. Indeed, there is no greater affront to reincarnation.

So do we turn our grief to joy as we send off the dead.

But the souls of those who held back their tears in life still need salvation in death. A duty that falls to the Watchers.

Their task is to guide the wandering souls known as the Lost, and serve as keepers of the Living World and the Beyond.

The Watchers sever the bonds that tie the Lost to this world, and send them on to the next. They navigate the emotions of the living and the dead. They prize life above all else.

This is the story of one Watcher.

CHARACTERS Kagachi

A young Watcher who embodies the tenets of reincarnation. Kagachi considers it his sacred duty to usher souls into the next world—even if it means taking lives. But when he meets a mysterious girl named Linne, his fate becomes entwined with blood and death.

Linne

A mysterious girl who appeared to Kagachi in his youth. Years later, they meet again… though she has not age a day. She has no memory of who she is, or even her name, so Kagachi calls her Linne, after the Linnaea flower.

The Night Devil

A swordsman from a forgotten time, cloaked in the ink-black flames of damnation. No one knows the true face of this wretched creature, a man forever bound by his own malice. The Night Devil wanders in darkness, hunting Linne in his attempt to unleash his hatred upon the world.

Kushi

Though he usually comes across as enigmatic and elusive, Kushi is nevertheless an exemplary Watcher and trusted leader. He is also the man who raised Kagachi. Kuchi seldom talks about himself, so few know his inner thoughts, but he makes no attempt to hide his deep affection for his daughter, Mayura.

Mayura

A young Watcher with a kind heart, Mayura is Kushi's daughter and Kagachi's childhood friend. She places profound importance on her relationships with others, whether with the souls of the Lost, or the Daemons she manifests. Yet this is also the source of her greatest strife. Standing as she does between the living and the dead, the tensions created by the precepts of reincarnation are a constant struggle for her.

Lobelia

The sovereign lives a life of isolation, able to trust in none but herself. Lobelia can seem cold and aloof, remaining at a distance from those around her, and seldom appearing before her people. Indeed, many of her subjects would scarcely recognize her at all. To Lobelia nothing is more important than upholding the tenets of reincarnation, and it is clear she will not tolerate even the slightest deviation.

Leo

Lobelia's right-hand man, and trueborn son. Since his youngest days, Leo has revered Lobelia not as mother, but as sovereign. There are no others Leo trusts, none whom he calls friend—but he has never begrudged her that. Leo follows the sovereign's words with blind devotion, and pays no heed to anyone else, a fact which has put him at odds with the Watchers.

Aisha

A passionate and caring Daemon. Aisha has been at Kagachi's side since he first became a Watcher. She still holds distant memories of fleeting happiness and an intense longing for love. Aisha can dash to move quickly across the battlefield, and the swords she wields strike fast and hard, making her a well-balanced warrior.

Zaav

A Daemon with a strong sense of justice and unwavering honesty. Even in death, the inner turmoil Zaav felt in life is evident within him. He still holds distant memories of hatred suffered and deep regrets. Zaav wields spears as he charges into the fray, and he doesn't flinch at taking a few hard hits. He can also leap into the air, enabling him to attack from land or sky.

Wil

A cheerful Daemon who's easy to like, though dealings in his past life have left it difficult for him to trust others. Wil still holds distant memories of roaming far and wide, a time of great joy mixed with bitter hatred. Able to crush foes through stern defenses, he boasts the most offensive power of any Daemon, and he can use his massive axes to block incoming attacks.

Izana

Able to maintain her composure in most any situation, Izana knows how to stand her ground. She is an aloof Daemon who observes the words and emotions of the living with great interest. Izana still holds distant memories of the cold tears of the dead and the twisted smiles of the living. She wields scythes that cut through large swathes of the battlefield with devastating power. She can also move in the blink of an eye, enabling her to strike from the blind spots of her foes.

Dia

A Daemon whose courteous manner and graceful bearing exude an air of refinement. Dia always prioritizes her companions above herself. She still holds distant memories of wandering through the darkness, and a faint light dancing in the palm of a hand. Wielding a crossbow in one hand and a pistol in the other, Dia excels at unleashing a hail of attacks from afar. She can spring into the air, putting distance between herself and her foes, even while maintaining the onslaught.

Rigan

A Daemon who's a natural on the battlefield. Though Rigan's upbringing left him with a course tongue, his heart is no less kind for it. He still holds distant memories of turning away from a warm, outstretched hand. Rigan uses speed as his weapon, defeating foes by overwhelming them with quick attacks. He also employs counterattacks and evasive rolls for a highly technical style of combat.

Gavod

An audacious Daemon who's never caught off guard, Gavod is keenly aware of the actions and emotions of others, and makes every effort to accommodate them. He still holds distant memories of loved ones, and eyes filled with despair. Gavod is a skilled user of shieldcannons, unwieldy weapons that afford the protection of a shield and allow the user to keep up heavy, close-range attacks while waiting to unleash a devastating cannon blast
